When Henry Brown first walked through the doors of a Shannex community, it wasn\u2019t to start a new career – it was to visit his father. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His dad, a longtime chef himself, had recently moved into one of the residences. Henry came by often, and over time, those visits sparked something deeper. With a growing interest in cooking and a desire for meaningful work, he applied for a role in the kitchen. That was more than two decades ago. Today, Henry is the Culinary Manager at\u00a0West Bedford Transitional Health<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0a state-of-the-art\u00a0Shannex\u00a0community,\u00a0and his passion for the work is as strong as ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI started in this profession later in life – in my late twenties – because I wanted to try something new,\u201d he says. \u201cMy dad was a chef, so I said, \u2018Why not?\u2019\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been cooking ever since.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crafting Care, One Meal at a Time<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Henry\u2019s day starts early. He walks into the kitchen each morning and checks in on how things went the night before. Then it\u2019s time to get to work – chopping, prepping, making soups and salads, ensuring everything is ready for the residents and patients upstairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re cooking for 30, 50, even 100 people, everyone has different needs and preferences. Some love my shepherd\u2019s pie, some don\u2019t,\u201d he says with a smile. \u201cThe hardest part is trying to meet people in the middle. But that\u2019s also what makes it rewarding.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His approach goes far beyond simply preparing meals. For Henry, food is an extension of care – a way to bring comfort, nourishment, and familiarity to people navigating times of transition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t a restaurant where if you don\u2019t like the food, you just don\u2019t come back,\u201d he says. \u201cOur patients depend on us. That\u2019s why feedback is so important. I always ask my cooks to check in with people \u2014 to see how dinner was, what we could improve. That feedback helps us get better.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A New Chapter at Transitional Health<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

After many years and several roles across Shannex communities, Henry saw the opportunity to join the team at West Bedford Transitional Health<\/a><\/strong>, a newly opened facility dedicated to short-term care and rehabilitation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d been in my previous role for a while and felt like I needed a change,\u201d he explains. \u201cWhen this new building opened, I talked to my boss and decided it was the right move. Plus, I like shiny new things,\u201d he adds with a laugh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What he found at West Bedford was more than a fresh start \u2014 it was a tight-knit team, a supportive environment, and a renewed sense of purpose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice for the Next Generation<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

For anyone considering a career at Shannex, Henry offers honest advice grounded in years of experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBe ready to work hard, stay humble, and be part of a team. We\u2019ve built a great culture here. Everyone supports one another, and we all take pride in what we do. Come to work because you care, because you want to make a difference, and because the work matters.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mindset has carried Henry through two decades of growth, learning, and meaningful moments. And he\u2019s not slowing down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery job I\u2019ve had at Shannex has taught me something. I\u2019ve enjoyed every one of them. And I still look forward to what\u2019s next \u2014 whether that\u2019s in a year, two years, or five. You never know where your path might lead.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
