March 10, 2025

Keep Well Antigonish Society has been a beacon of support for older adults in the Antigonish community. With a mission to promote health, wellness, and social engagement, this organization has developed programs that cater specifically to the needs of older adults, ensuring they not only thrive physically but also enjoy a rich social life.

Ann Bigelow, President of the Keep Well Antigonish Society, proudly notes the organization’s remarkable growth — participation has more than tripled since its inception. Feedback from participants highlights the importance of social interaction, with many valuing these connections just as much as the physical benefits of the programs.

This commitment to fostering connection and well-being is reflected in the tailored programs for older adultss, designed to meet the diverse needs and interests of older adults in the community.

Tailored Programs for Older Adults

Physical Fitness Classes

Recognizing the importance of staying active, three ten-week exercise sessions are offered each year with multiple class options to accommodate varying mobility levels. Participants can choose from:

  • General Fitness: Focused on strength, flexibility, and balance.
  • Nia: A joyful movement practice that blends dance, martial arts, and healing arts.
  • Chair Yoga: Perfect for those with limited mobility, allowing older adults to engage in physical activity while seated.

Wellness Programming

In addition to fitness, the society offers robust wellness programming, which includes:

  • Online Newsletters: Covering health-related topics relevant to older adults.
  • Zoom Presentations: Featuring experts on health, safety, and wellness for older adults.
  • Community Café: A monthly in-person speaker series in collaboration with the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library, focusing on various wellness topics.

Funding for Growth and Sustainability

The grant funds will be crucial in allowing the Keep Well Antigonish Society to continue offering and expanding its programs, which are provided free of charge to older adults, ensuring accessibility for those on limited incomes. With over 100 participants enrolled in each session and more than 30 individuals on the waitlist eager to join, they plan to introduce an additional in-person class to accommodate this demand.

Additionally, while their dedicated volunteer Board has managed the program, the increasing complexity of coordination has led to the hiring of a part-time Program Coordinator. These funds will help sustain this position, allowing them to enhance program management and provide more older adults with the opportunity to participate in exercise classes and socialize with their peers.

In addition to fitness and wellness programming, the Keep Well Antigonish Society is dedicated to providing resources and information that enhances older adult community involvement, further enriching their lives. This commitment exemplifies the power of community support and engagement in improving the quality of life for older adults.

By continually expanding their programs and services, they promote physical health while nurturing a vibrant, connected community. If you’re interested in supporting their mission, consider volunteering to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local older adults.

Keep Well Antigonish Society is one of the many organizations supported by our Shannex Cares Community Spirit Grant program, which provides funding for projects and initiatives focused on making a meaningful impact in the lives of older adults.
