World Alzheimer’s Month

This September, during Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we are reminded that nearly one million Canadians are projected to live with dementia by 2030. At Harbourstone Enhanced Care, a long term care community in Cape Breton, N.S., one of the nurses has been advocating for Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness.

Courtney Richardson’s advocacy journey began during her nursing career. She found a passion and deep-rooted commitment to mental health awareness during this time. She observed the challenges faced by those living with dementia and their caregivers, and it caused her to explore safety and effective behavioural approaches in care.

Although Courtney is not personally affected by dementia, she’s witnessed the struggle of loved ones supporting those with the disease, which has underscored the urgency of community involvement. She encourages people to support the Alzheimer’s Society’s advocacy and research and to learn more about causes and care approaches for dementia.
