In August, we are spotlighting our dedicated team members who contribute to community safety.

This summer, Tiffany Beck, LPN and Client Service Manager at Parkland Antigonish has gone above and beyond to ensure the well-being of residents by creating a dedicated Sun Safety board. Located in a prominent area, the board offers sunscreen samples that residents can easily grab before heading out for their daily walks.

Tiffany, who is passionate about health education, shared, “I noticed that many residents weren’t carrying sunscreen with them, and with the heat waves we’ve been experiencing, it became clear that we needed to do more to promote sun safety.” Her initiative emphasizes the importance of protecting against sun damage, especially for seniors who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

This summer, Atlantic Canada, including Halifax, and Nova Scotia, has been experiencing unprecedented heat waves as part of a global trend of record-breaking temperatures.

Heat warnings have been issued across multiple provinces, including Nova Scotia, with June 2024 marking the hottest month ever recorded globally. These extreme temperatures highlight the importance of staying safe and taking preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses, especially for seniors who are more vulnerable to heat stroke and dehydration.

“Sun safety isn’t just about avoiding a sunburn,” Tiffany explained. “It’s about taking steps to prevent long-term skin damage and reducing the risk of heat stroke, which is particularly important for our elderly residents.”
