Since 1950, the Cape Breton Regional Library (CBRL) has been a cornerstone for older adults in the community, providing essential resources and programs tailored to their needs. With a focus on accessibility, CBRL offers large print collections, Braille titles, audiobooks, and specialized reading equipment like the Optelec Travelling Magnifier and various digital readers. Their “Your Way to Keep Reading Kits” and PlayAways ensure everyone finds joy in reading.
At Shannex, we prioritize a holistic approach to wellness, active living, and social connections for older adults, aligning with the mission of the Cape Breton Regional Library (CBRL). CBRL promotes accessibility with large print collections and audiobooks, fostering cognitive and emotional well-being and encouraging lifelong learning. Programs like Saturday Strolling in Baddeck promote physical activity and social connections, while book clubs and knitting groups combat loneliness.
What Makes CBRL Stand Out for Older Adults?
Tracy Wilson, Coordinator of Community Support at CBRL, emphasizes the library’s commitment to creating a supportive and engaging environment for older adults.
She notes that the library goes beyond just offering books; it fosters a sense of community where older adults feel respected, valued, and connected through these key aspects:
- Staff Interaction: Our staff treat older adults with respect and care, remembering names and engaging in friendly conversations, whether at a branch or on the Bookmobile. Families are warmly welcomed, making visits enjoyable for all.
- Reading Communities: For those looking to engage in reading communities, we offer over 100 book club titles, ensuring each one is available in various formats — large print, e-books, and audiobooks—so everyone can join the discussion.
- Welcoming Spaces: Older adults can find peaceful nooks for reading newspapers and magazines. Our Community Bulletin Board shares local events, fostering belonging and encouraging participation in programs that inspire new interests.
- Inclusive Atmosphere: CBRL stands out for its dedicated staff who create an inclusive environment where older adults thrive. We provide a vibrant community that celebrates their stories and contributions, making every visit enriching.
Strengthening Services Through Grant Funding
The recent grant funding will help enhance CBRL’s offerings, aiming to better serve older adults with print disabilities and promote lifelong learning. CBRL plans to use the funds to develop adult collections and acquire equipment for reading, learning, and entertainment, addressing the rising costs of materials.
This funding is expected to significantly benefit CBRM and Victoria County older adult populations by improving access to library collections and services. This initiative will enhance learning opportunities and provide entertainment, ensuring that older adults feel valued and engaged in their community.

Cape Breton Regional Library is one of the many organizations supported by our Shannex Cares Community Spirit Grant program, which provides funding for projects and initiatives focused on making a meaningful impact in the lives of older adults.
