Committed to
quality care since 1988

In 1988, Joseph Shannon purchased Breton Bay nursing home in Sydney, NS. His deep commitment to quality care and service excellence transformed Breton Bay and started the Shannon family on a path of improving the lives of seniors. What started with one nursing home has grown to be a full continuum of service operated by Shannex in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario. Home care, retirement living, assisted living, memory care and long term care are all services offered by Shannex.

Our philosophy of service

We are flexible, open and accommodating at all times, in every circumstance. Our Philosophy of Service is our promise to residents and the backbone of our culture.

Our continuum of service

At Shannex, we understand that people value choice and independence; this is the foundation of our Philosophy of Service and our commitment to residents and families.

Our team members provide a range of services and care to seniors across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario. We recognize needs can change over time. It is why we have designed a continuum of service that provides peace of mind knowing when you need us, we will be there.

Our people

Often, the impact our Great People have in the lives of residents and their families extends far beyond the exceptional care and service provided. A hand to hold. A listening ear. A voice of encouragement on a hard day.

They are the spirit and foundation of our organization and we are proud to share their stories.

We will provide allyship and mentorship to ensure all members of our team feel like they belong.

We strive to Lead the Way to Inclusive Spaces.

Our community commitment

Support for the community is what started us on this journey when our founder, Joseph Shannon, purchased a nursing home in Sydney, Nova Scotia 35 years ago. Today, we continue to recognize the interconnectedness of the people who live and work with us by supporting organizations and programs that create strong and meaningful connections with the greater community and provide fulfilling experiences for our residents, their families and team members.

Our Shannex Cares initiatives guide us in leading the way to better living by making a difference in the lives of all seniors. Specifically, we affect positive change in the areas of seniors’ mental health, anti-ageism, affordable and inclusive housing, quality care.
