Today is an exciting day for Shannex New Brunswick. This morning, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the official opening of Cohen Hall, our newest 60-bed licensed nursing home located on the Parkland Saint John campus in Saint John, New Brunswick. Jason Shannon, president of Shannex, was joined by Honourable Dorothy Shephard, Minister for Social Development, and Honourable Trevor Holder, Minister for Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour for the event.
“Just over a year and a half ago, the Government of New Brunswick placed their trust in us to create a community as part of their vision and unwavering commitment to serving seniors in the Greater Saint John region,” said Jason Shannon, president of Shannex. “With the right partners and team, we were honoured to do so. When we welcome our first residents tomorrow, we’ll see real evidence of the difference we are making together.”
Cohen Hall is named in memory of the late Erminie Cohen, a well-respected Senator from New Brunswick who always had time for others and worked her entire life to create opportunities for people to live better lives. Senator Cohen was one of the first residents to move into Parkland Saint John when it opened in 2015 and she made an impression on everyone she met. Members of her family were also present at the celebration.
“Senator Cohen contributed to many causes and was a founding member of the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation, a cause that was near and dear to her heart,” said Mr. Shannon. “In honour of her many contributions, we are pleased to make a donation to the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation.”
Cohen Hall is a two-storey community with neighbourhoods of 30 residents on each floor. Neighbourhoods have dedicated nursing stations, dining rooms, living rooms, libraries and activity spaces. Each resident has a private suite and washroom ensuring privacy, dignity and safety.
The new home also features an innovative indoor Main Street that promotes independence and a sense of community where residents enjoy spending time on a small-town street complete with a café, town hall, hair salon and multi-purpose room that serves as a chapel, theatre and community gathering space.
Shannex is excited to be expanding its presence in the Saint John community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to creating this beautiful new home for seniors in the Greater Saint John region.
