Designated Support Persons
We are pleased to support the province’s recent decision to allow Designated Support Persons (DSP) in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia licensed long term care homes. This means residents or substitute decision makers (SDM) can appoint up to two (2) individuals as their designated family/support persons while still welcoming visitors.
What is a Designated Support Person?
A Designated Support Person (DSP) is a new role aimed to support the resident’s wellbeing, health and quality of life.
The type of support this role can provide may consist of physical and aspects of wellbeing including, but not limited to:
- Assisting the resident with eating
- Mobility assistance
- Assistance with personal care
- Facilitation of communication and emotional support
DSP Visits
As is the rule with all visitors to our homes, a DSP will have to book their time at the home in advance (and can book multiple days at a time); wear a sticker identifying their role while in the home (will be provided); be required to screen before entry; wear a mask at all times, and conduct hand hygiene when entering and leaving the home. Physical distancing is also required.
Ensuring a safe visit/Active Screening Guide
Screening: Visitors will be pre-screened when they call to book their visit/appointment and their contact information will be recorded. Upon arrival, visitors will also be actively screened, including temperature checked. Visitors who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 or any other acute infection such as influenza, common cold, etc. will not be permitted to enter the home. All visitors must sign the visitor log upon arrival to the facility.
