A New Pathway for Internationally Educated Nurses to Become Nurses at Shannex

With more than 37 years as a trusted provider of quality accommodations, services and care to older adults, Shannex is built on a foundation of Great People and exceptional service. As our continuum of care continues to grow, we are working to welcome more front-line team members to a meaningful career with our organization.

Shannex is fortunate to have many Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) currently working in various roles in our Enhanced Care, Retirement Living communities, and in our West Bedford Transitional Health facility. Our innovative in-house program is designed to prepare Internationally Educated Nurses, who may or may not already work at Shannex, to be Licensed Practical Nurses in one of our communities.

About the Program

The Shannex Enhanced Orientation for Nurses (EON) Program is an innovative and supportive process that allows Internationally Educated Nurses to confidently transition into Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) practice at West Bedford Transitional Health. The program will be delivered within a thoughtfully designed healthcare learning space located in West Bedford. Each cohort can accommodate 16 nurses as they participate in a paid six-week, in-person comprehensive nursing refresher, with a focus on caring for patients 18+ who no longer require a hospital stay, but need additional support before they return to community. By the end of the program, participants will provide safe, competent, ethical, and compassionate nursing care according to Shannex’s policies and standards of practice.

Shannex’s Learning and Development team will facilitate in-person learning and provide ongoing support to nurses as they transition into practice. We are now accepting applications for our next cohort, which will start in April 2026.

About West Bedford Transitional Health

Shannex has partnered with Nova Scotia Health (NSH) to bridge the gap between hospital and community care. The first of its kind in Nova Scotia, West Bedford Transitional Health serves patients 18+ who no longer require a hospital stay, but need additional support before they return to community.

Adding this new service is reducing emergency wait times and capacity challenges faced by Nova Scotia’s health care system by freeing up hospital beds.
