COVID-19 Update: March 6, 2020

March 6, 2020

Update: March 6, 2020

Like other healthcare providers, Shannex teams have been monitoring the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation for some time and are taking steps to protect residents and team members.
Under the guidance of our organizational Infection Prevention and Control specialist and consistent with our organizational infection prevention and control practices, multidisciplinary teams have been meeting regularly to monitor the situation and follow all communication and direction coming from the World Health Organization, the Public Health Agency of Canada and our provincial Public Health bodies.
As an additional precaution, we have activated our Pandemic Preparedness Plan to monitor and prepare all team and established a staff and visitor screening process at all locations.
As always, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from illnesses by taking some simple steps.

  • Wash and sanitize hands often
  • Monitor individual symptoms and take appropriate precautions
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid contact with others who are sick
  • Avoid touching your face

We encourage all residents and families to contact a member of the management team at their Shannex, Parkland or Faubourg community with any questions about their practices.
Additional information on this Coronavirus can be found on the Public Health Agency of Canada’s website: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus.html

COVID-19 Update: March 10, 2020

March 10, 2020

Update: March 10, 2020

Shannex has implemented its Pandemic Plan and continues to actively monitor information being released about the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
While the risk remains low in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario, the international situation is changing quickly and our priority is the health and safety of all residents and team members.
At the direction of the Pandemic Response Team, our communities are now implementing visitor and employee screening protocols to protect residents and employees.
Beginning immediately, visitors to any Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg locations:

1. Must be close family members
AND
2. Must be free of respiratory symptoms
(fever, new or worsening cough, shortness of breath)
AND
3. Must not have travelled outside Canada in the past 14 days

Decisions related to visitor restrictions are based on direction provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial Public Health bodies.
Questions related to Shannex’s pandemic preparedness can be directed to ipac@shannex.com or a member of the management team at your Shannex, Parkland or Faubourg community.
Frequent hand washing with soap and warm water remains the best defense against the spread of respiratory illnesses. You can also limit the spread of illness by following these simple practices.

  • Wash hands often
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow
  • If you use a tissue, dispose of it as soon as possible and wash your hands

COVID-19 Update: March 13, 2020

March 13, 2020

Update: March 13, 2020

The COVID-19 Coronavirus situation is evolving rapidly.

As of today, there are no cases of COVID-19 in any of our communities.

In keeping with our proactive approach to protecting the health and security of everyone in our communities we are taking the extraordinary measure of closing our communities to visitors at this time.
We understand this may cause concern for residents and their families, but we have made this decision, with great care and with the health of our communities as its guiding principle.

We also understand that every resident and every community is different. If families are in situations where we must make an exception to this measure we will work with them to identify a solution.
Our direction is based on information from the World Health Organization, Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial Public health bodies.

COVID-19 Update: March 16, 2020 – An update to our valued community

March 16, 2020

Our valued community,

Given the rapidly evolving situation over the weekend related to COVID-19, I wanted to personally provide an update today to our valued community. We have been posting updates daily to our website since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. This practice will continue, and we would ask all families and friends of those living within Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg residences, as well as other stakeholders, to continue to check our website as the main source of information as events are changing around us daily.

Our robust Pandemic Plan is built on a strong foundation of best practices in infection protection and control. The Pandemic Response Team meets regularly to provide support to operational teams at all of our locations and follow direction provided by the World Health Organization, the Public Health Agency of Canada and our provincial public health bodies.

The first and most important message is that we are doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of those who live and work in our communities. As stated in previous updates, we have now closed our communities to all visitors, with only limited exceptions. I would ask you all to adhere to this direction or consult a member of the management team at your community before you enter one of our residences. Shortly, we will be sharing additional direction for families with respect to residents leaving the residence and the potential impact of residents leaving, as well as information about families dropping off supplies and packages for loved ones.

We have advanced screening protocols in place for all employees to ensure they are not coming to work if there is any risk that they have been exposed to COVID-19 or are otherwise unwell. We also require all employees who have travelled outside the country to wait 14 days before returning to work.

We have increased our cleaning protocols. Our procurement team has secured additional medical and operational supplies at all locations and our culinary teams have increased food supply at each site to ensure a month’s worth of food in case of delayed deliveries.

I am confident the right measures are being put in place to keep residents and employees safe and healthy, but we must continue to work together as this situation evolves. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to us:

Please continue to protect yourselves and those around you: wash your hands often, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, avoid contact with others who are sick and avoid touching your face.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to each of you for your support and collaboration as we navigate this challenging time.

COVID-19 Update: March 19, 2020 – Keeping Residents Engaged

March 19, 2020

We know these are challenging and uncertain times given visitor restrictions and group activity cancellation amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to reassure you that our team of Great People are doing everything they can to ensure residents are safe and engaged. COVID-19 Update: March 23, 2020 – An update to our valued community

March 23, 2020

An update to our valued community,

Today, I want to take a moment to share another update and message of solidarity and preparedness during what is certainly an unsettling time for all of us. Going forward I plan on continuing with these updates once a week.

As of Sunday, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have all declared states of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While this will help manage the spread of the virus and save lives, it is also a clear sign of the seriousness of our current situation.

This has been particularly difficult for residents, families and team members. I want to reassure you that our entire organization remains focused on implementing our pandemic plan, as we have been for many weeks.

  • We took early action to close our communities to visitors and implement advanced screening protocols for all employees consistent with directives issued by provincial public health bodies.
  • While continuing to comply with all social distancing directives, we are working to increase recreation programming and staffing in order to offer more programs to keep residents engaged and active. All communities have programs in place to help families connect with loved ones through video calls, telephone calls, email or deliveries.
  • Dining rooms and meal service have been adapted to ensure social distancing standards.
  • Increased cleaning and disinfecting protocols have been introduced and continue.
  • Our procurement team has secured additional medical and operational supplies at all locations.
  • Culinary teams have increased food supply at each location to ensure a month’s worth of food in case of delayed deliveries.
  • Each community is sending regular updates to residents and families. If you are not currently receiving these messages, please contact your community directly.

With the hard work of teams at all levels of our organization, these pandemic plan measures are reviewed and updated daily.

Although I am very confident in the precautions we have taken, we must all continue to work together. With gratitude, I want to recognize the tireless efforts of our Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg team members who are such strong supports for residents at this time. And thank you to family members and others who are sending messages of support to both residents and staff.

We are in this together and we thank all of you for your support.

Employee at Lewis Hall Tests Positive for COVID-19

March 28, 2020

We can confirm that an employee who works at Lewis Hall in Dartmouth has tested positive for COVID-19. Their positive diagnosis is linked to close contact with another case in the Halifax area. Lewis Hall is not a licensed long term care home. It is a private retirement living community.

The individual last worked on March 22. They have not been in the workplace since then and took all appropriate precautions in notifying both Public Health and our Occupational Health team.

Public Health is providing all direction to the individual and to our clinical teams. We are working closely with them to take all steps to protect every person who lives or works in our community.

This is an unsettling situation for our residents and team members. Our Infection Prevention and Control Specialist is working closely with the clinical team at this location and collaborating with Public Health to manage this situation and ensure all residents and team members are taking proper precautions with their health and safety as our highest priority.

Our entire organization is focused on supporting our communities through this challenging time today and as the days go on.

COVID-19 Update: March 30, 2020 – An update to our valued community

March 30, 2020

To our valued community,

As we begin another week during this unprecedented time, I want to provide an update on how we are preparing for the days ahead.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a universal experience, but for residents in our communities, their families and those of us who provide care and service to these vulnerable individuals, it is particularly unsettling.

For weeks, we have worked around the clock implementing extensive measures to protect our communities. We are not alone. In every region with a Shannex, Parkland or Faubourg community, our sector partners are facing the same challenges and stepping up to take the necessary precautions.

This past weekend in Nova Scotia, one of our locations, Lewis Hall in Dartmouth, NS, was confronted with the reality that COVID-19 is at our doorstep. I am pleased to say that team members at Lewis Hall responded appropriately. Because they followed our advanced screening protocols, we were notified as soon as possible and personnel on site took all appropriate infection prevention and control steps to protect residents and themselves.

The results of COVID-19 testing on Lewis Hall residents conducted on Saturday at the direction of Public Health are negative. This is good news and, although we are optimistic, we are not prepared to take any chances. Residents will be kept under observation and monitored for symptoms until they have passed the 14-day window since last contact. This level of continued vigilance will help protect the health and safety of residents and team members and is something we all must practice in the coming days.

We ask everyone to continue to follow the clear advice being given by Public Health experts, including social distancing, handwashing and monitoring yourself for symptoms. Thank you to our valued team members for complying with these important measures. Today, I shared a message with all employees that provides valuable additional information about the critical importance of continued monitoring and compliance in helping us protect our communities.

In addition, we continue to require all team members to adhere to our advance screening protocols and contact their assigned Occupational Health and Wellness team member with questions or to report symptoms.

To our Great People who continue to come to work each day to care for those who depend on you, I want to express my gratitude for your commitment.

Whether you are a resident, family member or team member, I encourage you to take care of yourself so we can all keep working as a team to protect our communities.

We are in this together.

COVID-19 Update: April 1, 2020 – Employee Screening Protocol Updated

April 1, 2020

All Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg team members participate in advanced screening protocols before entering the workplace. These are consistent with directives issued by provincial public health bodies.

Between April 1st and April 6th, all sites will be adding a measure to minimize the risk of COVID-19 entering our communities by implementing active screening at entrances to the site. This includes temperature checks of employees upon arrival for their scheduled shifts. All employees will be required enter their location via a designated entry point.

COVID-19 Update: April 3, 2020 – A message of gratitude to our valued community

April 3, 2020

To our valued community,

My message to you today is simple. It is one of gratitude.

To residents in all of our communities, thank you for your incredible spirit. Even though the measures we have put in place to protect you are challenging and many of you are worried, you remain strong and positive. You inspire us all and remind us every day why we work so hard to protect the communities you call home.

To family members counting the days until you can be with your loved ones again, we are very grateful for the support you have shown our team members. You are constantly finding new and innovative ways to send love to residents in our communities, even during these difficult times.

To every team member who comes to work each day, thank you for doing your best to keep residents safe and well and for looking after each other. The role you play is critical. I have heard many stories of employees going above and beyond, stepping up and demonstrating what it means to provide compassionate care and service in such challenging circumstances. We are grateful for your dedication and commitment. I know you could not do this without the support of your own family and am thankful for their generosity and patience as you do your part to care for residents.

I am very proud of our team members’ commitment to implementing the many pandemic response measures we have put in place to help protect our communities (visit Shannex.com for detailed pandemic response information).

There are many things we cannot control during this period of uncertainty. To face the hard days ahead, we must continue working together to stay safe and healthy by following physical (social) distancing principles, handwashing and monitoring yourself for symptoms. Every preventive action helps flatten the curve.

We are in this together.

COVID-19 Update: April 7, 2020 – A message to residents and families at Shannex licensed long term care communities

April 7, 2020

The following letter, from our Corporate Medical Advisor, Dr. Valerie Lewis, has been sent to all Residents, families or substitute decision makers in all Shannex licensed long term care communities.

Dear residents, families and substitute decision makers of Shannex licensed nursing homes,

I am writing to you as Medical Advisor with Shannex. I hope all of you are keeping well during this stressful time. The world and local news are full of information around COVID-19 but I want to take a moment to reach out to you to discuss more specifically how we are preparing at Shannex and how this could affect your loved one.  This is a difficult letter to write, and I know, a difficult letter for you to read.
As you already know, we have had to stop having family and visitors into our nursing homes.  As you are not there in person right now, please know that behind the scenes, our staff has been working tirelessly to do the work needed to avoid or mitigate an outbreak. Despite all of our precautions, an outbreak may still happen. Because of that very real possibility, we want to share with you what we know at this point about how COVID-19 can affect older adults and those with pre-existing health conditions.

COVID-19 is a viral illness that spreads like the flu and is hard to contain, despite everyone’s best efforts.  We know it is particularly serious in older and frail people, especially for those who have other medical conditions.  Many of the conditions that contribute to the need for long-term care also affect how the body copes with a COVID-19 infection. People who are older and who have other health problems have a much higher chance of dying from COVID-19 compared to a younger or healthier person. This is true whether or not they live in long-term care.

The safest and most comfortable place for your loved one to be cared for is with us at Shannex. Doctors in other parts of Canada and the world have learned that there is very little benefit when older, frail people with COVID-19 go to the hospital.  In particular, attempts at CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) are very unlikely to be successful for older, frail patients with COVID-19, and they are unlikely to survive even with intensive care.  We are also considering the probability of harms for patients, as hospital interventions are very likely to be physically and emotionally traumatic. Finally, in looking at all the benefits and harms we are also considering the risks of infection for the community of residents, staff, and care providers and the community more broadly.

We are also putting extra safeguards in place to avoid transfers to hospital for non-COVID-19 related illnesses as much as possible, to try and lessen the potential for infection with COVID-19.
We are preparing to care for any of our residents who become sick with COVID-19 in Regional Designated Care areas. These regional Designated Care areas are equipped to manage this illness and will be following the principles of care provided local health authorities.  These guidelines will direct us when it might be appropriate for a resident to be evaluated for acute care assessment or treatment. Many residents in the long-term care population are there because of their high level of frailty and so will not likely meet the criteria for transfers to hospital-based COVID-19 Units or intensive care because they would not likely survive. We want you to know that our main priority is to ensure that your loved one is comfortable and cared for throughout their illness if they were to become sick.

Most COVID-19 symptoms are related to cough, fever and shortness of breath.  Most of these could be managed however some residents might develop a rapid and severe pneumonia that can only be managed palliatively, and care for these residents will be guided by our palliative care program and local health authority guidelines.  Although there is no treatment for COVID-19, there are medicines and treatments for symptoms that will be provided by Shannex team members, where residents with COVID-19 will be provided with fluids and nourishment as needed for their ongoing comfort. Our nurses are very skilled and experienced in providing comfort measures, and a COVID-19 illness would be no different in that regard.

We know that these are very difficult circumstances to consider, and we wanted to start an open dialogue in order to provide what reassurance we can and to help you understand what might happen in a worst-case situation.  Additional support is available from our team to help you cope with the situation. You can reach out to the care team for a more in-depth discussion about goals of care for your loved one.

We remain dedicated to our residents, your loved one.  Our hearts go out to you during this distressing time. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,
Dr. Valerie Lewis, MD, CCFP, COE
Corporate Medical Advisor

COVID-19 Update: April 7, 2020 – A message to our valued community

April 7, 2020

To our valued community,

I am writing to you today with another update about our COVID-19 response. Over the weekend, we learned that three employees tested positive for COVID-19. This was more unsettling news for all of us.
The employees work at Arborstone Enhanced Care, a licensed long-term care home in Halifax, N.S. Harris Hall, a private retirement living residence in Dartmouth, N.S.; and Jubilee Hall/Concorde Hall, a private retirement living residence in Quispamsis, N.B.

I want to confirm the three employees were exposed to the virus outside our communities and are now in direct contact with Public Health and receiving support through our Occupational Health and Wellness team.

Public Health also continues to be involved with the clinical teams at each location and we are taking all appropriate infection control measures. To date, we have not been notified of any additional positive results among our employees and there are no cases of COVID-19 among residents in any of our communities.

We understand that our commitment to communicating openly with our valued community will sometimes cause you to have questions and concerns. We want to assure you that we appreciate how engaged our community is and will always do our best to get you the information you need.
As a result of questions we received in response to information shared this weekend, we want to provide more details about the important steps we have taken to protect our communities. A summary of all of our COVID-19 response measures is found on Shannex.com.

Employee screening protocol and masks worn by team members:  All Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg team members participate in advanced screening protocols before entering the workplace for each shift. These are consistent with directives issued by provincial public health bodies. We have added temperature checks for employees arriving for their scheduled shifts and have rolled out a new protocol for employees to wear non-medical masks in our homes when they are working. This has been in trial since last week at several locations and should be fully operational very soon across all locations. These same protocols also apply to all agency staff who must come into any of our buildings.

When an employee receives a positive diagnosis for COVID-19:  Public Health immediately moves to isolate the person with the confirmed diagnosis and those with whom they have had contact. Public Health directs actions and care provided to the employee and moves very quickly to reach out to any person who has had contact with the individual and to provide clear direction on what to do. Public Health also provides direction for which residents or team members might need to be tested as a result of being in areas where these employees worked.

Shannex’s contact tracing and other precautions: Shannex’s Infection Prevention and Control Specialist and Occupational Health team lead an additional thorough contact tracing process. They identify any team members and/or residents who had contact with these employees and provide clear direction and support. This can include placing some residents in isolation or under observation out of an abundance of caution.

Communicating with residents and families: You will soon receive detailed communications from our Medical Advisor and regional leadership to help explain the procedures we will follow if we have a resident with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in any of our locations.

The COVID-19 pandemic is evolving daily. That’s why our COVID-19 Response Team meets every day to review our precautionary measures and make updates as needed.

We will continue to practice open communication when we have a case of COVID-19 in one of our communities and provide regular updates to residents and family members.

If you have additional questions, I encourage you to contact a member of the management team at your Shannex, Parkland or Faubourg community. They look forward to speaking with you at any time.

We are in this together.

Jason Shannon, President and COO

COVID-19 Update: April 11, 2020 – Media Correction

April 11, 2020

There was a news report on April 10, from Global News that incorrectly stated we have residents at our homes who had tested positive for COVID-19.

At this time, we have no residents with COVID-19.

We will always communicate information related to COVID-19 cases to residents, families and team members as our priority and that information will also be shared with the public.

If you are a resident or family member with concerns or questions, we encourage you to contact a member of the management team at your location who will be pleased to help you.

Thank you.

COVID-19 Update: April 13, 2020 – Confirmed Resident Cases of COVID-19

April 13, 2020

In the past 24 hours, we have received notification from Public Health of two residents who have tested positive for COVID-19.

In both cases, we have involved our organizational COVID-19 Response Team, which includes our Infection Prevention Control Specialist and Occupational Health leadership, who are now actively working with the sites. When someone tests positive, Public Health moves quickly to contact any person who has had contact with the individual and provides clear direction on how to proceed. In addition, we are conducting our own thorough contact tracing and taking additional steps to protect residents and team members. In some cases, this will include additional infection prevention and control precautions, including the appropriate use of PPE.

The first case is a resident from the Fishermen’s Cove neighbourhood at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney, N.S. Late last night, April 12, 2020, Public Health informed us the resident had tested positive for COVID-19. This resident had been transferred to the hospital on April 11 and remains there.

All residents in the Fishermen’s Cove neighbourhood have been tested and placed on isolation. We continue to monitor them closely. At this time, there are no other residents at Harbourstone who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Public Health has also directed testing of some employees working on the resident’s neighbourhood. These employees are currently off-work and being followed by our occupational health team pending results from the tests. At this time, there are no team members at Harbourstone who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The second case is a resident from the Ringdale neighbourhood at Maplestone Enhanced Care in Halifax, N.S. We received notification this afternoon that this resident has tested positive.
All residents of the Ringdale neighbourhood and the adjacent Evans neighbourhood will be tested and have been placed on appropriate infection control precautions. Team members continue to monitor them closely. At this time, there are no other residents at Maplestone who have tested positive for COVID-19.
Public Health will provide direction for testing of team members working on the Ringdale resident’s neighbourhood as appropriate. Our occupational health team is currently conducting our own employee contact tracing and risk assessment as we await direction from Public Health. At this time, there are no team members at Maplestone who have tested positive for COVID-19.

In an effort to minimize the risk to other residents, we have activated our Regional Designated Care/Cohorting Area at Parkstone Enhanced Care. The Maplestone resident was transferred there this afternoon. These areas follow all standard isolation protocols, including the appropriate use PPE, and are also staffed by team members who are dedicated to caring for residents with COVID-19 and have separate entrances and staffing levels to care for affected residents.

We have contacted all residents, families and team members at both sites and will continue to keep them updated.

We are grateful for the bravery and commitment of our team members and the support of our partners at the Department of Health and Wellness, Public Health and the Nova Scotia Health Authority as we continue to work together during this challenging time.

COVID-19 Update: April 14, 2020 – Designated Care/Cohorting Areas Established

April 14, 2020

As part of our pandemic plan, we continue to put in place concrete steps to protect our communities, but we understand the situation is evolving daily.

As a preparatory measure and to allow us to be able to continue to care for residents affected by COVID-19 while also ensuring the safety of other residents and team members, we have established regional designated care/cohorting areas within our communities to be used specifically to provide care to residents who get diagnosed with COVID-19.

The use of designated care/cohorting areas is a directive from public health bodies, including the Department of Health and Wellness (section 4.3 of the COVID-19 Management in Long Term Care Facilities Directive, April 6, 2020) and a best practice as per Infection Prevention and Control Canada (IPAC) and the Public Health Agency of Canada. They have also been endorsed by our Corporate Medical Advisor and our Infection Control Specialist.

  • Residents who are affected are moved away from residents who are not affected.
  • They offer increased staffing support for residents who have tested positive.
  • They provide an added layer of protection for residents who are not positive as these areas will be completely separated from the rest of the home.
  • Employees who have self-identified to work in these areas will receive additional training and are provided with meals, scrubs, and access to alternate lodging if they choose to live away from home while working in the DCA.
  • As with all of our care environments, employees working in these areas have full access to appropriate personal protective equipment, gloves, gowns, masks and eye protection.
  • Employees working in these areas will care only for residents in the DCA and will self-isolate for 14 days following their last DCA shift before returning to their home site.
  • We have additional measures in place to ensure no unauthorized personnel or residents enter the designated care areas

Several criteria have been used to help us select which area of our communities will become the designated care area. These include:

  • A separate and dedicated entrance with immediate ground-floor access to the outside to eliminate the transportation of goods and people through the home and to allow team members to enter and leave from a separate entry than all other employees;
  • A location with a physical space that can be separated from the remainder of the home, either through the reliance on existing fire doors or a temporary physical barrier; and
  • As well as the availability of a sufficient number of suites to care for residents and store all necessary supplies for our team members.

Based on these criteria, the following sites were identified as regional designated care/cohorting areas:

Nova Scotia:

  • Harbourstone Enhanced Care (Sydney) – Wentworth Court
  • Parkstone Enhanced Care (Halifax) – Flemming Court
  • Cedarstone Enhanced Care (Truro) – Chapell Court
  • Parkland Truro – Fergus Hall, A Wing
  • Parkland Cape Breton – 3rd Floor
  • Parkland Antigonish – Mary’s Court & Martha’s Court
  • Parkland at the Lakes 1 & 2 (Dartmouth) – Medical Clinic at PAL 2
  • Parkland Clayton Park (Halifax) – Aberdeen Hall

New Brunswick:

  • Losier Hall (Miramichi) – Adult Day Centre area
  • Parkland Fredericton (Fredericton) – Frederick Hall
  • Faubourg du Mascaret (Moncton) – Vitalité Medical Clinic
  • Parkland Saint John (Saint John) – Bloom Vitality Medical Clinic

Ontario:

  • Parkland on the Glen (Mississauga) – Glenerin Inn

As a result, some residents will be required to be temporarily relocated to other areas of their community to make room for the designated care/cohorting area. Each site has identified where to best move residents as part of their plan and those impacted have been informed.

The designated care/cohorting areas will be fully staffed and offering focused care by Shannex employees who are prepared and supported by a corporate team.

We will be working with EHS in Nova Scotia and with Ambulance New Brunswick in New Brunswick to transport affected residents from their current Shannex, Parkland or Faubourg community to their site’s designated care/cohorting area as required.

COVID-19 is a contact/droplet virus that is of larger droplet size which typically falls quickly to the floor after being released into the air by cough or sneeze. That said, our ventilation systems follow strict preventative maintenance processes to ensure they are working optimally at all times. Our main Air Handling Unit Systems are located externally on all our buildings to constantly pull in 100% fresh air to supply the interior zones. The supply air travels throughout the buildings on one system, the exhaust air travels throughout the buildings on a separate system and the air is then exhausted to the building exterior.

All recirculation routes have been temporarily decommissioned to ensure no cross contamination. As the supply air passes through the system, it is filtered by grade filters (MERV 14 – these are typically used in hospitals and surgical rooms).

At this time, it is hard to predict for how long the designated care areas will be in place. We understand these are unprecedented times and we appreciate your support. Residents and families who have questions should contact their Site Management.

COVID-19 Update: April 16, 2020 – Community Report

April 16, 2020

We remain committed to providing open communication about our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how it is affecting our communities.

Our priority will always be to first share information with residents, families and our team members. We will also share Community Reports regularly on our website.

As a result of contact tracing and subsequent testing, we can report the following information.

Two additional residents from the Fishermen’s Cove neighbourhood at Harbourstone Enhanced Care have tested positive for COVID-19. The remaining tests for residents on this neighbourhood and the adjacent neighbourhood have returned negative. The first resident remains in hospital and the additional two residents who have tested positive have been transferred to a designated care/cohorting area (DCA) within Harbourstone.

The resident from the Ringdale neighbourhood at Maplestone Enhanced Care who tested positive earlier this week remains in our regional DCA. All test results for residents of the Ringdale neighbourhood and the adjacent Evans neighbourhood have returned negative.

To date, we have received no positive test results for employees at either Harbourstone Enhanced Care or Maplestone Enhanced Care.

The affected residents who are now in our DCAs, are experiencing mild symptoms at this time and have dedicated team members assigned to their care and comfort.

Teams at each location and members of our COVID-19 Response Team, which includes our Infection Control Specialist and Occupational Health leadership, continue to work with Public Health to ensure all appropriate infection control measures are being taken.

We are very grateful for our dedicated team members who remain committed to caring for residents during these challenging times and for the ongoing support and collaboration we have received from Public Health and the Department of Health and Wellness.

About Designated Care/Cohorting Areas

Designated Care/Cohorting Areas (DCAs) minimize the risk to other residents by grouping residents with COVID-19 together separated from those who are not affected. These areas are staffed by team members who are dedicated to caring for residents with COVID-19. More detailed information about our DCAs is available here.

COVID-19 Update: April 17, 2020 – FAQ – What happens when a resident/employee tests positive for COVID-19

April 17, 2020

Q: If a resident at my Shannex, Parkland or Faubourg location has a confirmed case of COVID-19, what happens next?
Our team members have clear guidelines for how to proceed if they are notified that a resident has received a positive diagnosis for COVID-19. As a first step, they will immediately move to take the appropriate infection control precautions, including isolating the resident if this has not already been done.

Public Health directs all care and precautions required for the affected resident and they will move quickly to conduct contact tracing which identifies any other residents or team members who have been in contact with the affected individual. This includes which residents and team members must be tested.

In addition, Shannex’s Infection Prevention and Control Specialist and Occupational Health team lead a thorough contact tracing process. They identify any team members and/or residents who had contact with the affected resident and provide clear direction and support.

We place great importance on open communication. As a priority, we will immediately start communicating with all residents, families and team members at the location to make them aware of the situation. We will also share information related to the case on our website once all affected residents, families and team members have been informed.

Q: If a team member at my Shannex, Parkland or Faubourg location has a confirmed case of COVID-19, what happens next?

Our management team members have clear guidelines for how to proceed if they are notified that a team member at their location has received a positive diagnosis for COVID-19. In most circumstances, the affected team member will already be off work. However, if the staff member receives news that they have a confirmed case and they are at work, they will be asked to leave the workplace immediately.

Public Health will communicate directly with the team member to direct actions and care. During this time, the team member will continue to have full support from our occupational health team. Public Health will also move quickly to conduct contact tracing which will identify any person who has had contact with the individual and to provide clear direction on what to do. This includes which residents and team members must be tested.

Shannex’s Infection Prevention and Control Specialist and Occupational Health team lead an additional thorough contact tracing process. They identify any additional team members and/or residents who had contact with these team members and provide clear direction and support.

We place great importance on open communication. As a priority, we will immediately start communicating with all families and team members at the location to make them aware of the situation. We will also share information related to the case on our website once all affected residents, families and team members have been informed.

Q: How will a resident or team member know if they have been exposed?
Public Health conducts contact tracing for all confirmed cases of COVID-19. They contact individuals directly if they are considered to have been exposed to a positive case and will provide them with direction on next steps.

Shannex’s Infection Prevention and Control Specialist and Occupational Health team lead an additional thorough contact tracing process. They identify any team members and/or residents who had contact with these team members and provide clear direction and support.

If you are not contacted by Public Health or have not received direction from our internal team, and are concerned in any way, please reach out to us so that we can understand your situation and help as needed.

Q:  If exposed, will residents be kept in another section of the home?
If Public Health and/or Shannex have deemed that any resident has been exposed to a team member or other resident with COVID-19, they will work closely with our clinical teams and advise on next steps to ensure the safety of the resident and the entire community. For residents, this could mean they will have to be under infection control precautions including isolation for 14 days, along with anyone they have had close contact with. We may also choose to place a neighbourhood of residents under isolation for a period of time to make sure everyone stays healthy and safe.

Q: Will potentially exposed team members be sent home immediately?
Shannex will work closely with Public Health to determine the next steps a team member must take to keep everyone, our team and residents, safe and healthy. We will always act out of an abundance of caution when making these decisions.

COVID-19 Update: April 21, 2020 – A message to our valued community

April 21, 2020

To our valued community,

I am writing to our valued community today with great sadness. The tragedy that took place over the weekend in Nova Scotia has moved us all. I know it is especially difficult for those who had connections to individuals and families who were affected. We have a number of communities in the area where this took place and I am conscious that many of our team members and residents are feeling this deeply.

We will mourn together as a community of people who care about, and for, one another.
This morning at 10 a.m. AST, all Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg communities observed a moment of silence to honour the lives lost and pay respect to the families and friends who continue to suffer.
We have arranged for virtual counselling services to be available to all team members at our sites in Nova Scotia that have been particularly impacted. A private room is available with a phone line and instructions for how to access 24-hour counselling and grief support.

Any Shannex team member can reach out to our Employee and Family Assistance Program for support and resources for coping with reactions to stress and anxiety. Immediate and confidential EAP services are accessible 24-hours per day.

In addition, our EAP partner Morneau Sheppell has opened a Crisis Support Line for any employee, their family members or their personal community that is in need of emotional support in relation to these events – they do not need to be a Shannex employee. The Crisis Support Line is open 24/7 and can be reached at: 1-844-751-2133.  By calling, individuals will receive professional emotional support and/or referral to community. These services are available for anyone regardless of their direct or indirect connection to those affected, or regardless of the level of support needed.

We are here for you and are in this together.

Jason Shannon, President and COO

Our priority will always be to first share information with residents, families and our team members. We will also share Community Reports regularly on our website.

It saddens us to report that a resident from the Fishermen’s Cove neighbourhood at Harbourstone Enhanced Care has passed away. This resident had tested positive last week and was being cared for in our designated care/cohorting area at Harbourstone.

We offer our sincerest condolences to the resident’s loved ones at this very difficult time. As a well-loved member of the Harbourstone community, this resident will be greatly missed by many team members.
Our teams continue to monitor and test additional residents in all our communities as needed. We have no additional resident cases to report and the two previously reported confirmed positive residents living with us at this time are being cared for by dedicated team members in our designated care/cohorting areas.

COVID-19 Update: May 5, 2020 – A message to our valued community

May 5, 2020

To our valued community,

I am pleased to announce that two residents receiving care in our Designated Care/Cohorting Areas (DCAs) after testing positive for COVID-19 are now considered recovered and they have returned home. This is very good news, especially for their families and the team members who care for them every day.

Early in our evolving response to COVID-19, we made the decision to establish DCAs in order to provide the safest circumstances for both residents and team members. We based this decision on the fact that we didn’t understand the true nature and extent of how the virus would spread, so using our typical in-room isolation procedures could be challenging. We know this decision made some families concerned for their loved ones, but we wanted to take every precaution to ensure there would be no spread to other homes. I am proud to say that the DCAs operated according to plan and allowed us to contain the virus when necessary by ensuring we removed the risk from the home and ensured only dedicated staff cared for those with COVID-19. As a result of not having residents with COVID-19 at this time, we will temporarily close our DCAs, but they can be reopened very quickly if required.

None of this would be possible without the support of our Great People who were, and are, prepared to work in the DCAs to care for residents when they need it most. Some of you were called into action and others continue to stand by, ready to do your part. Thank you.

The lessening of restrictions in New Brunswick over the past two weeks is more encouraging news. While we know we must continue to be vigilant, we are working on strategies which will allow residents to leave safely and visitors to enter our communities in New Brunswick with screening and PPE measures in place. As these are finalized and approved by our health authorities, they will be shared with all of our valued stakeholders. In Nova Scotia, we remain cautious at this time and we are not making any changes in our protocols. We will always provide more details about changes to our valued community prior to them being implemented.

Our recovery plan will be guided by the same principles as our COVID-19 response plan, including making decisions based on information from the World Health Organization, Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial public health bodies.

Each of us has played a part in flattening the curve and getting us to this point. Now is the time to keep doing things right by following Public Health orders and monitoring yourself for symptoms. We will continue to be prepared for the fact that COVID-19 is still in our communities and may present itself at any time.

We are in this together.

Jason Shannon, President and COO

COVID-19 Update: May 6, 2020 – Community Report

May 6, 2020

We remain committed to providing open communication about our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how it is affecting our communities. Our priority will always be to first share information with residents, families and our team members. We will also share Community Reports regularly on our website.

We have been notified by Public Health that one of our team members at Drummond Hall, a private retirement living community in Halifax, N.S., has a positive diagnosis for COVID-19. The team member last worked on May 1 and has not been in the workplace since then. They were exposed to the virus outside the Drummond Hall community.

This employee was wearing their enhanced personal protective equipment (PPE) for each shift worked prior to the positive diagnosis, meaning the employee used a medical mask at all times on shift, and a gown, gloves and face shield when providing close contact care to any resident. As a result of this, our preliminary investigation indicates the risk to residents and employees is very low, however, out of an abundance of caution and with the support of our partners at Public Health, we have made the proactive decision to test all residents of Drummond Hall. These residents will be in isolation until the test results are received and we will be monitoring them closely and ensuring they are comfortable.

The team at this location along with members of our COVID-19 Response Team, which includes our Infection Control Specialist and Occupational Health leadership, continue to work with Public Health to ensure all appropriate infection control measures are being taken.

At this time, we have no additional resident or employee cases of COVID-19 to report. Our teams continue to monitor and test additional residents in all of our communities as needed.
We continue to evolve our COVID-19 response with extensive protection measures in place including daily temperature checks for team members and twice daily temperature checks for residents, masks for all team members, appropriate use of PPE, enhanced cleaning, physical distancing and visitor restrictions. We have also prepared designated care/cohorting areas with dedicated staffing for residents with COVID-19 should they be required.

Our dedicated and compassionate team members continue to work very hard during an incredibly challenging time and we are grateful to them. We would also like to express our ongoing appreciation for the support and collaboration of our union partners and partners at Public Health, Department of Health and Wellness and the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

We remain committed to providing open communication about our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how it is affecting our communities. Our priority will always be to first share information with residents, families and our team members. We will also share Community Reports regularly on our website.

The following is an update on our COVID-19 cases.

We have no active resident cases of COVID-19.
Earlier this week, two residents receiving care in our Designated Care/Cohorting Areas (DCAs) after testing positive for COVID-19 were discharged. They are now considered recovered and have returned home to their own suite.

We have two active employee cases of COVID-19.
We have had a total of six team members diagnosed with COVID-19. Each worked at a separate location. Four team members have recovered. One team member from Drummond Hall, a private retirement living community in Halifax, N.S., and one team member from Arborstone Enhanced Care, a licensed long term care community in Halifax, NS, are currently out of the workplace and self-isolating at home. We are pleased to report that none of the six employee cases resulted in transmission of the virus to residents or other employees.

We have more than 4,500 dedicated and compassionate team members who work on the front lines serving our nearly 4,300 residents in more than 50 residences every day. These exceptional team members continue to have the full support of their operational management teams and our COVID-19 Response Team. Together, they have been successful in limiting the spread of COVID-19, but we remain vigilant and continue to work together to protect residents with ongoing support from our partners at Public Health, the health authorities, Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness, New Brunswick Department of Social Development and our union partnerships.

COVID-19 Road to Connection Planning
As communities see fewer cases of COVID-19, provincial governments have begun to lessen restrictions. We watch these developments very closely and pay particular attention to directives from public health bodies as we make our own plans.

In every region where we operate, our plan is to lessen restrictions in a phased approach that is consistent with our guiding principles and provincial phases and triggers. This includes placing the health and wellbeing of residents and team members first, minimizing risk, relying on best available evidence and being proactive and forward thinking. The lessening of restrictions may change at any time based on direction from public health and ongoing surveillance of COVID-19 cases in the communities where we operate and at our own locations. Visit our Road to Connection webpage for more information.

COVID-19 Update: May 27, 2020 – A message to our valued community

May 27, 2020

To our valued community,

Like you, I have been reading reports in the media that call into question the standards of care in some long term care communities in other jurisdictions in the country.

Over the past few months as our organization has responded to COVID-19, we have taken many additional measures designed to protect residents in our communities while continuing to ensure standards of quality care are being met. One of the most important measures has been to provide additional support and safeguards to our dedicated and compassionate front line teams who prioritize the quality of resident care every day and play a unique role in supporting residents during a time when their loved ones cannot be with them.

Our priority has been to ensure that our front line teams have the resources, equipment and supplies necessary to meet the physical and emotional needs of residents each day. Our leadership teams have met daily throughout the pandemic to assess needs and support our essential front line team members each day.

We do so through a number of standard processes:

Infection Control

  • Our Pandemic Response Team has met regularly since January and daily since March, to lead, oversee and adapt our organizational response to COVID-19 in a rapidly changing environment. This team includes our Infection Prevention and Control Specialist (IPAC), occupational health, asset/facilities management, procurement, clinical practice, human resources, communications and operations leadership.
  • Designated care / cohorting areas were established in every region we operate to ensure each home had access to a dedicated environment equipped to safely care for residents diagnosed with COVID-19 in environments separate from other residents and employees. Full details of our DCA plans have been shared on our website.
  • In addition to required IPAC and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) education when a team member is hired and annually afterwards, education on IPAC protocols including the appropriate use of PPE have been provided continuously throughout the pandemic.

Staffing

  • Our operational leadership reviews staffing levels daily for each home as measured against provincial requirements for staffing levels.
  • During the pandemic, we engaged temporary support workers for each home to provide additional support over and above provincial staffing requirements.
  • Since 2018, we have onboarded more than 240 new team members through our immigration strategy focused on hiring newcomers who are foreign trained nurses into Continuing Care Assistant type positions which are critical roles in providing care in our long-term care homes.
  • Through our immigration strategy, we have developed an ongoing recruitment pathway which typically results in the homes being staffed over and above provincial requirements for a period of time following onboarding of new staff.
  • Physicians and Nurse Practitioners are essential members of our health care teams. They have continued to provide care to our residents without interruption, including through virtual rounds when clinically appropriate to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Standards of Practice / Quality of Care

  • We consider our communities to be our residents’ homes. We work hard to provide care and service in ways that are consistent with this. We post a limited amount of standardized care information in each resident room, easily visible to anyone providing care. This identifies residents’ physical, behavioural, communication and environmental needs along with other pertinent resident information. In addition, all employees in the residents’ circle of care have access to the resident’s electronic health care record.
  • Through our electronic health record, we monitor key health indicators, including the completion of daily care tasks, to ensure that quality care continues to be provided.
  • Regular resident risk meetings are occurring at each site to ensure our comprehensive approach to monitoring resident risks continues.
  • Regular medication reviews have continued to ensure continued appropriate use of medications.
  • We have a robust wound management strategy that includes the monitoring of incidence, prevalence and staging of wounds daily.
  • We have a robust incontinence program that includes regular resident assessment in partnership with our incontinence partner to ensure that residents have the appropriate products and individualized program that respects their dignity.

Supplies

  • Early in March, and throughout the pandemic, we took measures to secure our supply chain for essential items including food, nursing supplies, linens, cleaning and sanitizing products, and PPE. We worked centrally and with each site to secure increased inventory of essential medical and operational supplies.
  • Essential supply inventory was monitored daily at the site level and across the organization

Communication

  • Our residents’ connections to their loved ones are essential. While we know nothing compares with a hug and seeing a loved one face-to-face, we have facilitated these connections through virtual visits and window visits throughout the pandemic.
  • Resident care conferences, a standard part of our care relationship with each resident or their substitute decision maker, have continued virtually at each site and we welcome requests for a special care conference at any time.
  • Through the Pandemic Response Team, all instances of employee and resident symptoms, COVID-19 testing and test results were tracked and monitored daily.
  • Residents and families have been kept up to date on our response and given opportunity to ask questions through regular communication from each site, organizational COVID-19 website, a toll-free information line and IPAC email address.

Appropriate Behaviour

  • All employees are required to complete mandatory training on hire and annually thereafter in the areas of respectful workplace, zero tolerance of resident abuse, infection prevention and control measures, resident and workplace safety, and resident care.
  • Associated policies and appropriate steps are taken to address concerns that arise in any of these areas.

We look forward to welcoming families back to our communities as we know the critical role they play in the lives of their loved ones. Until then, we are here for residents and we are here for you. We also welcome your feedback on our approach to safeguarding resident wellbeing. Please do not hesitate to contact a member of the management team at your location and they will be happy to speak with you.

We are in this together.

COVID-19 Update: June 18, 2020 – Welcoming Visitors Back to our Communities

June 18, 2020

We are pleased to be safely welcoming visitors back to all of our Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg communities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick as of this week. Our Ontario communities will open to visitors beginning on Sunday, June 21, 2020.

How to visit

Each community has a process in place that includes pre-booking a visit and complies with Public Health directives. Before you plan a visit with your loved one, please call your location to understand the process and pre-book an appointment. This will ensure you have all the information you need to be ready for your visit and we are able to control the number of visitors at the community at one time.

  • When booking a visit over the phone, we will explain our visiting process and precautions.
  • Please arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled visit. This allows time for us to complete an on-site screening. Scheduled visits must end on time to allow others to enjoy their scheduled visit.
  • Visitors must stay in designated spaces during their time at our communities consistent with our visiting protocols.
  • Following your visit, we will thoroughly clean all touched surfaces prior to the next family visit.

Remember to check the weather. If your visit is scheduled to take place outdoors, it may have to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Loved ones will be contacted directly if this affects their visit and we will look to reschedule as soon as possible.

Our response to COVID-19 is evolving and these measures may change at any time. We will review daily and make modifications as necessary with the health and safety of residents as our top priority and based on directives from Public Health.

Welcome back!

COVID-19 Update: September 23, 2020 – Designated Support Persons

September 23, 2020

Designated Support Persons

We are pleased to support the province’s recent decision to allow Designated Support Persons (DSP) in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia licensed long term care homes. This means residents or substitute decision makers (SDM) can appoint up to two (2) individuals as their designated family/support persons while still welcoming visitors.

What is a Designated Support Person?

A Designated Support Person (DSP) is a new role aimed to support the resident’s wellbeing, health and quality of life.

The type of support this role can provide may consist of physical and aspects of wellbeing including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting the resident with eating
  • Mobility assistance
  • Assistance with personal care
  • Facilitation of communication and emotional support

DSP Visits

As is the rule with all visitors to our homes, a DSP will have to book their time at the home in advance (and can book multiple days at a time); wear a sticker identifying their role while in the home (will be provided); be required to screen before entry; wear a mask at all times, and conduct hand hygiene when entering and leaving the home. Physical distancing is also required.

Ensuring a safe visit/Active Screening Guide

Screening: Visitors will be pre-screened when they call to book their visit/appointment and their contact information will be recorded. Upon arrival, visitors will also be actively screened, including temperature checked. Visitors who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 or any other acute infection such as influenza, common cold, etc. will not be permitted to enter the home. All visitors must sign the visitor log upon arrival to the facility.

If you have questions or are interested in becoming a DSP, please contact the management at your site.

COVID-19 Update: October 21, 2020 – COVID-19 Lessons Learned

October 21, 2020

We are an organization that has a long history of quality improvement. We know there is always room to do better and we regularly provide opportunities for our stakeholders to share their feedback with us so we can learn and improve. During the summer, as part of our process of reflecting on our performance, we asked our employees, residents and family members, for their feedback on our COVID-19 response so far. We wanted to hear from them about what we did well, and what we can improve as we prepare for a potential second wave. We were pleased that 1,063 people took the time to provide feedback on what they felt was important.

One thing that was clear in the survey results is the residents and families’ appreciation towards our team members for keeping their loved ones safe during these challenging times. We also heard that frequent communications and quick response was done well. While 94.4% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with our response, we learned that there were some important things we can do better. Families would have benefited from having more accessible communications; residents wanted more opportunities for engagement; and team members would have liked better clarity and consistency on direction for new precautions.

This feedback has been critical in helping us make plans for the future. And while we have already actioned a number of the suggestions received, we will continue to use the learnings and to reflect them in our COVID-19 response going forward.

  • We have introduced recorded memos for hearing impaired residents, use large print signage, and established regular site level communications (print, e-mail or recorded phone message) for residents and families.
  • We are pleased to offer safe indoor and outdoor visits that comply with Public Health directives, and also have a process in place to facilitate Designated Support Persons for residents. We also purchased more iPads and hired additional temporary support workers to support resident connections.
  • We developed a schedule for communication with team members, improved our web portal and dashboard on the Intranet to easily access relevant organizational directives and precautions, and enhanced our training to ensure the most up-to-date knowledge programs for our team members.

Our teams continue to be vigilant and are prepared for a potential second wave of COVID-19 with this important feedback included in our planning. We also now have more experience and information about COVID-19 and how to protect our communities. As a result, if we see increased cases in regions where we operate, we have plans in place to assess the situation and put appropriate precautions in place based on Public Health directives and with the safety and wellness of residents and team members as our highest priority. This may mean that we will have increased precautionary measures in place in some locations where there are a higher number of cases. We will always communicate with residents, families and team members first should this happen.

National Infection Control Week

October 23, 2020

October 19 to 23 is National Infection Control Week.

Everyone has a role to play in infection prevention and control. Lisa Snodgrass is our Director of Clinical Practice and Infection Control Specialist and she leads our COVID-19 response team. These are her thoughts on the importance of infection prevention and control during these challenging times.

Lisa Snodgrass, Director, Clinical Practice and Infection Control Specialist at Shannex

Why is infection prevention and control important?

Infection prevention and control has an impact on every part of our lives and the lives of our residents. Being proactive and making infection prevention activities a part of our daily lives and routine can make a huge impact on the number of infections (COVID-19 and others) that we see in our communities. Things as simple as washing your hands, properly disinfecting surfaces and staying away from others when you are feeling unwell can go a long way.

How does your Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) certification help you in your current role?

Being part of IPAC has allowed me to gain more insights into non-clinical aspects of infection prevention and control that ultimately impact the clinical setting, such as construction and maintenance activities. It also has provided me with a network of subject matter experts world-wide which opens the door to new ways of thinking and innovative solutions to infection control challenges we may see.

What is Shannex doing to ensure we are ready for a potential second wave of COVID-19?

Our team ensures all aspects of infection prevention and control are covered. Because no one person can do it all, taking a team approach ensures we put forth a robust effort to managing the COVID-19 pandemic. We meet regularly and keep up to date with provincial updates and surveillance. During the first wave, our front-line teams, residents and families implemented all our precautions. With their feedback, we made some adjustments and feel prepared for a potential second wave as we enter the fall and winter months of this pandemic.

How can everyone help control and prevent infection?

By following Public Health directives and incorporating simple strategies like washing your hands, wearing your mask and keeping physical distancing a part of your daily routine, everyone can make a difference. With flu season approaching, it is also very important to get your flu shot to help protect yourself and others.

COVID-19 Update: November 19, 2020 – A message to our valued community

November 19, 2020

A message to our valued community,

The second wave of COVID-19 is here. Like you, I have watched cases of COVID-19 increase across the country and here in our Atlantic Bubble. I am sure this is as concerning to you and your family as it is to me.

Today, we are activating our second wave COVID-19 response in all Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg communities. It is critical that each of us carefully considers our actions and follows public health advice as we go about our day-to-day lives and while at work.

  • Keep gatherings small and with consistent groups.
  • Stay home when you are not feeling well.
  • Properly wear a mask when required.
  • Practice physical distancing and proper hand hygiene.
  • Download the COVID Alert App

In our communities we will be reviewing all directives with our teams and closely monitoring cases in the areas where we operate to ensure we are responding with additional precautions as needed.

Sometimes, we will need to make difficult decisions, but we make these calls to keep our residents, and to keep you, as safe as possible. You have all worked hard since the beginning of this pandemic and these efforts helped us limit the spread of COVID-19. Today, I am asking you to remain vigilant so we can protect residents and each other from this virus.

As the holiday season approaches, these precautions can be especially hard, but we do these things because we care about each other: our families, our residents, our communities. We must support each other and work together to stay safe.

We are in this together.

Second Wave Response: High Alert Areas

November 20, 2020

Part of our Wave 2 response to COVID-19 is to declare “high alert areas” for our communities located in an area where there is a spike in COVID-19 cases. For these “high alert” locations, we will implement increased precautions. This approach allows us to protect residents and team members by controlling the flow of people in and out of our communities while continuing to allow visitors in communities not affected by the outbreak.

If a community is located in a “high alert” area, residents and families will receive notification from the management team at that location including information about precautions in place. Typically, precautions will be as follows and mainly affect visiting. These will be in place temporarily and assessed daily.

  • For licensed long term care, memory care and assisted living buildings, all indoor, outdoor and off-site visits would be temporarily suspended with the exception of previously identified designated support people and palliative care visits.
  • Residents would be permitted to leave the community to attend appointments and upon return, actively screened.
  • For all other retirement living buildings, visits are permitted but must take place in the resident’s suite and visitors will be provided with a medical mask and actively screened when they arive.
  • Residents may leave the building and will be actively screen upon return.
  • Visitors coming from a high alert area will be restricted from entering any location outside the area.

As we respond to Wave 2, sometimes, we will proactively adopt protective measures before they become directives from public health bodies and this is always done with the health and safety of residents and team members as our guiding principle.

High alert areas will be listed on our website: shannex.com/covid19
For questions or concerns about high alert areas, please contact a member of the management team at your community.

December 15, 2020 – Six Residents of Tucker Hall in Saint John Now Recovered From COVID-19

December 15, 2020

Six of the 10 residents being cared for in our COVID-19 cohorting area at Tucker Hall are now considered recovered by Public Health. We expect the remaining residents to recover by the end of the week. Six of the seven Shannex employees who tested positive have also recovered and are cleared by Public Health and our Occupational Health team.

An outbreak of COVID-19 was declared at Parkland Saint John on November 20.

“It’s a good day at Tucker Hall,” said Derek Green, Vice President of New Brunswick Operations. “This is an important milestone in our recovery from this outbreak, and we are looking forward to having all residents recover in the coming days. This would not have been possible without the tremendous support and selflessness of our dedicated team members at Tucker Hall, including those who volunteered to work exclusively in the cohorting area. Thank you for always putting residents first. I would also like to thank Public Health and the New Brunswick Provincial Rapid Management Team, clinical members of the Department of Social Development and our other community partners for their continued support.”

Public Health, the Medical Officer of Health and Shannex’s Infection Control Specialist determine when a resident has passed the infectious stage, is improving and is deemed well enough to be discharged from the cohorting area. As residents recover, there is a plan and process in place for them to be safely discharged from the cohorting area. Once all residents have recovered, the cohorting area will be decommissioned. This transition is expected to be completed by Friday, December 18.

COVID-19 Update – Decommissioning of the Cohorting Area at Tucker Hall, Parkland Saint John

December 17, 2020

When a COVID-19 outbreak was declared at Tucker Hall on November 20, a cohorting area was rapidly established on Simms Court, one of the neighbourhoods of the community. A cohorting area is a dedicated space that is equipped with everything needed to isolate and care for residents who test positive for COVID-19. It ensures the safety of other residents and team members at Tucker Hall.
Upon testing positive, residents were immediately transferred to the cohorting area where they are being cared for since by dedicated staff. All residents being cared for in our COVID-19 cohorting area at Tucker Hall are expected to be considered recovered by Public Health later this week and we have a plan to safely discharge them from the cohorting area.

Plan for Discharging Residents

Public Health, the Medical Officer of Health and Shannex’s Infection Control Specialist determine when a resident has passed the infectious stage, is improving and is deemed well enough to be discharged from the cohorting area.

  • On day 14, following a positive diagnosis or date of symptom onset, a detailed assessment of the resident is done.
  • The resident then remains on isolation precautions in their suite for an additional seven days to provide them time to physically recover and remain separate from the rest of the residents on Simms Court.

When the resident meets these criteria, they will be considered recovered and will be discharged from the cohorting area.

Decommissioning of Cohorting Area

When all residents are considered recovered and approved to be discharged from the cohorting area, it will be time to decommission the cohorting area.

  • All rooms used in the cohorting area and all common areas of Simms Court will be professionally deep cleaned.
  • All employees who have been working in the cohorting area will leave the workplace and start their 14-day isolation period.
  • The physical barriers that were used as the walls of the cohorting area will be removed.

The decommissioning of the cohorting area at Tucker Hall is expected to be completed this week. For everyone at Tucker Hall, this will be another step toward a return to normal life in their community. Public Health will lift the outbreak status of Tucker Hall 28 days after the last case is identified

Tucker Hall Resident Recovers from COVID-19 in Time for the Holidays

December 17, 2020

The past month has been challenging for employees and residents at Tucker Hall where a COVID-19 outbreak was declared on November 20. But Garda Bishop, an 87-year-old resident who tested positive for the virus, is focused on being grateful for the care she received and looking forward to being reunited with her family.

When Mrs. Bishop tested positive, she was quickly transferred to a cohorting area within Tucker Hall. In this area, she was cared for by dedicated staff who had volunteered to work only with COVID-19-positive residents. Despite having to get accustomed to a different environment, Mrs. Bishop said these team members were always there for her. “They made me feel so safe and comfortable. I was never scared. I don’t want to leave,” said Mrs. Bishop with a giggle. “The people take such good care of me here and they even keep me company while I enjoy my cup of tea at night.”

Terri Lynn Nelson is a Licensed Practical Nurse who usually works at our Thomas Hall nursing home in Fredericton. She was one of the employees who volunteered to care for COVID-19-positive residents. For her, this has been a career-defining journey. “Having the privilege to care for residents during such a challenging time has brought a whole new meaning to work I already loved,” said Terri Lynn Nelson. “I’ve developed deep relationships with residents and witnessed the support they provided to one another. They believed in themselves, that they would come through this stronger.”

Terri Lynn also acknowledges the team effort that’s been required to manage and prevent further spread of the virus at Tucker Hall. “The team is such an incredible family and I’m proud to be a member of that family, even if it’s just temporary.”

As for Mrs. Bishop, while it has been a journey, she’s glad to be considered recovered from COVID-19 by Public Health. “I’m happy to have recovered and I feel as good now as I was feeling before getting the virus,” said Mrs. Bishop. “Now, I can’t wait to see my family again, just in time for the holidays.”

A Message of Gratitude and Best Wishes

December 23, 2020

The year 2020 has had many challenging days. Some of the hardest over the past few weeks. Through it all, our dedicated employees showed up with care and compassion in their hearts, driven forward by a commitment to resident safety and wellbeing. Together, we worked to protect our residents and each other. Something we could not accomplish on our own.

We are grateful for the understanding and cooperation from residents and families. We know it is difficult to comply with the many restrictions in place during this pandemic. We look forward to when we can easily be together again.

We commend our government partners for the difficult decisions they have made and the support they have provided throughout the first and second waves of the pandemic. This collaboration has helped us in controlling the outbreaks of COVID-19 we have faced.

Thank you for your ongoing trust and support. We wish you a safe, healthy and peaceful holiday season, and a bright New Year.

Sincerely,
Jason Shannon

Vaccine clinics will begin tomorrow morning and we have communicated information to all residents and families about how these will unfold.

It is our privilege to care for the most vulnerable people in our communities. We recognize that this comes with a great responsibility to safeguard their health and wellness and we appreciate that we will have the COVID-19 vaccine as another layer of protection at Parkland Saint John.

We are sharing this news following conversations and with the permission of the resident’s family to honour their life and because they were a member of our Lily Court community during this difficult time. Reporting on COVID-19
Reporting on whether a resident has passed due to COVID-19 is sometimes complicated because we need to work with multiple healthcare partners. Communicating openly with our residents, families and employees is a priority at Shannex and we understand that the delay in communicating the details may create some confusion, and we apologize for this.

We know that these are difficult times for everyone, and we wholeheartedly believe that the life of every resident who passes away in our communities should be honoured. It has been difficult for families, and for our team members, to appropriately celebrate the lives of the residents. It is our intention to pay tribute to those we have lost at some point in the future, in some way that is appropriate.

Testing Update
We have received all results back from Public Health for resident and employee testing conducted on Thursday, January 21 at Tucker Hall. Since our last update, no new cases were identified. We would like to thank the community for the support that has been shown to Tucker Hall residents, families and employees during this difficult time. We are grateful for the parade of first responders who drove by our community on Friday to show their respect and support for us. We will never forget this kind gesture.

COVID-19 Update: Ontario as of December 28, 12:30p.m.:

The following is an update related to our two Ontario communities.

Parkland on the Glen
**CORRECTION: On December 28 at 12:30 p.m. we inaccurately reported on the number of active cases at Parkland on the Glen. On December 28 there were three active cases (two residents and one employee). Fifteen resident and eight employee cases are considered resolved.**

A person with COVID-19 is considered to have a resolved infection once they reach a point where their infection is no longer considered active. Once they are at the resolved stage, they are no longer contagious to others. The person may still have unresolved symptoms at this point but are no longer actively infected with the COVID-19 virus. A person who is considered resolved may still remain on isolation for a period of time as they continue to heal from their course of illness.

A case is typically considered resolved 10 days after a positive test result or 10 days after symptoms of COVID-19 start (whichever is longer).

A person is considered to have an active case of COVID-19 once they have tested positive for the illness and have not passed the infectious stage. They may or may not have symptoms of COVID-19.

The following is an update related to an outbreak of COVID-19 at our Parkland on the Glen community.
Currently, there is one active employee case. As of today, 17 resident cases are considered resolved and eight employee cases are resolved. At this time residents continue to isolate in their suites and their health status is being monitored. We are working with public health, our occupational health and safety team and our infection control specialist to determine when it will be safe to reduce restrictions in the building.

Most of the results from last week’s testing are in and all are negative; however, we are waiting for a few resident and employee tests. We are working with public health to determine when the next round of testing will take place. Retesting is an important part of our COVID-19 response as it helps identify cases of COVID-19 in residents or employees who are not experiencing symptoms.

Resident physical and mental health are an important aspect of overall wellness, especially during our COIVD-19 response. We have established wellness lounges in three distinct areas inside Parkland on the Glen for residents to maintain their health and wellbeing. Following specific infection control protocols, five residents can attend at a time for 30 minutes. The aim of the wellness lounge is to assist with the mental and physical impacts of isolation in a safe and effective manner through engaging in a variety of appropriate activities. Before attending, residents undergo screening, sanitize their hands before entering the lounge, wear their mask the entire time, and maintain a minimum of 6ft distance from others. Staff are assigned to manage each wellness lounge to ensure adherence to public health guidelines and after each session the lounge areas are fully disinfected.

We appreciate the dedication our employees have shown in implementing and adhering to strict infection control practices. We also appreciate the cooperation our residents and families have shown during this challenging time, and we are grateful for the guidance and support we have received from public health.

At this time, we do not have any cases of COVID-19 at the Parkland on Eglinton West campus.

Happy Personal Support Worker Day!

May 19, 2022
(L-R) Tucker Hall Personal Support Workers, Alicia Soucy and Tyanna Tyler, dressed in full personal protective equipment during
an outbreak of COVID-19.

May 19 is Personal Support Worker Day! We would like to thank all our PSWs for their commitment to quality care and service. Today, we would like to introduce you to two of our Personal Support workers at Tucker Hall, part of the Parkland Saint John campus.

When Tucker Hall opened its doors in 2016, Personal Support Workers, Alicia Soucy and Tyanna Tyler were there to welcome residents. Since then, they have become integral parts of the community. Alicia’s bright personality has earned her the nickname “Ray of Sunshine” and Tyanna’s empathy and caring for others are admired by many. Over the years, they have formed strong bonds with residents that will last a lifetime.

“I love working with them,” says Tyanna. “They’re like my extended family.”

On November 20, 2020, the community, team members and residents faced a significant challenge – an
outbreak of COVID-19.

“The first thing I said when I was asked to help out was, ‘Oh my gosh, what I can do to help? Put me
where you need me,” says Alicia. “I immediately knew I needed to help.”

In the face of uncertainty, they put aside their fears and did what they always do by going the extra mile to provide quality care to residents.

This experience taught them many lessons that they have shared with others; both PSWs have supported eight COVID-19 outbreaks in long term care communities (three Shannex and four non-Shannex)
across New Brunswick.

“Alicia and I are a great team, and I’m so glad I got to have her at every outbreak,” says Tyanna. “It’s been great working with everyone and getting to know people in the other communities.”

“If someone asks you for help when they’re scared or in an overwhelming and fearful environment,
how can you say no?” says Alicia. “How do you say no? I couldn’t.”
