May 6, 2020

We remain committed to providing open communication about our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how it is affecting our communities. Our priority will always be to first share information with residents, families and our team members. We will also share Community Reports regularly on our website.

We have been notified by Public Health that one of our team members at Drummond Hall, a private retirement living community in Halifax, N.S., has a positive diagnosis for COVID-19. The team member last worked on May 1 and has not been in the workplace since then. They were exposed to the virus outside the Drummond Hall community.

This employee was wearing their enhanced personal protective equipment (PPE) for each shift worked prior to the positive diagnosis, meaning the employee used a medical mask at all times on shift, and a gown, gloves and face shield when providing close contact care to any resident. As a result of this, our preliminary investigation indicates the risk to residents and employees is very low, however, out of an abundance of caution and with the support of our partners at Public Health, we have made the proactive decision to test all residents of Drummond Hall. These residents will be in isolation until the test results are received and we will be monitoring them closely and ensuring they are comfortable.

The team at this location along with members of our COVID-19 Response Team, which includes our Infection Control Specialist and Occupational Health leadership, continue to work with Public Health to ensure all appropriate infection control measures are being taken.

At this time, we have no additional resident or employee cases of COVID-19 to report. Our teams continue to monitor and test additional residents in all of our communities as needed.
We continue to evolve our COVID-19 response with extensive protection measures in place including daily temperature checks for team members and twice daily temperature checks for residents, masks for all team members, appropriate use of PPE, enhanced cleaning, physical distancing and visitor restrictions. We have also prepared designated care/cohorting areas with dedicated staffing for residents with COVID-19 should they be required.

Our dedicated and compassionate team members continue to work very hard during an incredibly challenging time and we are grateful to them. We would also like to express our ongoing appreciation for the support and collaboration of our union partners and partners at Public Health, Department of Health and Wellness and the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
