Bridging Generations Through Creativity and Connection

On May 26, 2025, Grade 3 students from Mountain View Elementary School in Moncton, N.B., brought joy and energy to the residents of Ocean Hall and Garraway Hall. Together, they shared a morning filled with laughter, learning, and heartfelt moments, forging meaningful connections across generations. With beaming enthusiasm, the students guided residents in creating beautifully handcrafted cards and took turns reading stories aloud — a simple act that sparked smiles and conversation. The intergenerational activity was supported by the Centre of Excellence for Health and unfolded on the indoor Main Street, a signature feature of Shannex’s licensed long term care communities. Designed to offer a safe, engaging environment, this space helps residents retain a sense of independence, rekindle cherished memories, and enjoy the richness of social interaction.

Every year on June 1, we celebrate Intergenerational Day — a day dedicated to building bridges between age groups and honouring the shared wisdom, creativity, and joy that flourish when generations come together. For Shannex, supporting older adults means fostering environments where people of all ages — young adults, students, volunteers, team members, and older adults — can learn from, support, and enrich one another’s lives. It’s not just about co-existing in the same space. It’s about building relationships rooted in mutual respect, shared experiences, and recognizing that every generation has something valuable to contribute. Through mentorship, storytelling, joint programming, or collaborative care models, intergenerational approaches help reduce isolation, enhance empathy, and promote a stronger sense of community.

By embracing intergenerational thinking, we improve the quality of life for older adults and help shape a society that values aging as a time of continued purpose, connection, and contribution.
